The Conference proved successful given the many enthusiastic feedbacks. It was given additional weight by the presence of rectors of the main universities of Norway, economic professors from business schools in Bergen and Oslo, the Research Council of Norway and Industry leaders. They gathered to discuss the way forward in project based marine development.

During a pre conference constitutional meeting in Bergen (June 14) a new member organization, STORBY MARIN, has been formally installed as a prolongation of the MareLife Storby project. Tromsø City will be in charge of heading the first two years as the secretariat.

Prosjekt målsetning

MareLife Storby: regional competence put together on an aggregated national level to advance the marine sector as a whole.

MareLife Storby represents a new type of clustering in which each metropolitan region is thoroughly inventoried: research and industry go hand in hand with project owners, city council's business plans and ambitions of the marine sector.

MareLife Storby, national 'Bluebook' and profiling.

The project MareLife Storby will supply two products:

1. In the first instance "Bluebook": A survey (Region) of the intellectual and material "blue" resources, a national synthesis of this and with strategic recommendations on how we lift 'marine country' Norway further.
2. Furthermore, we will develop information materials to both national as international marketing of the Norwegian innovation power in the marine sector.

MareLIFE er en del av Storbyprosjektet som har som målsetning å bidra til økt innovasjon og styrke storbyenes motorrolle. Problemstillinger belyses gjennom konkrete innovasjonsprosjekter hvor samarbeid mellom myndigheter, bransjeorganisasjoner, privat næringsliv og kunnskapsmiljøer står sentralt. Ved vurdering av prosjekter vektlegges nasjonal overføringsverdi og regional forankring.

Storbyprosjektet ser på storbyenes rolle som motor for regional og nasjonal innovasjon. Prosjektet er regionalt forankret, og storbykommunene har initiativet. Med i prosjektet er byene Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen , Trondheim og Tromsø.

Universitetet i Tromsø:

Tromsø får sekretariatet de to første årene og styreleder blir professor Olaf Styrvold ved Norges Fiskerihøgskole ved Universitetet i Tromsø. "Denne organisasjonen skal ha fokus på et nært samarbeid mellom forskningsmiljøer, næringsliv og politiske miljøer for å skape potensial for regional utvikling. I tillegg skal den bidra til nettverksbygging mellom de store byene i Norge. Men like viktig er det å kommunisere et budskap om at man må villig bruke mer midler for å videreutvikle det marine miljøet for hele landets beste, for oljen kommer vi ikke til å ha evig" forteller Styrvold.
