Why investing during a economic down time? Orion B.V., a trendsetting Dutch MareLife member feels confident enough to invest in a multi-purpose fishing vessel, enabling them to target only healthy fish stocks at any time.

The vessel 'UK153' was build in Poland, assisted by multiple Dutch service providers and engineering companies. When the steel price was low and the Polish 'sloty' currency was low Pieter Louwe van Slooten decided the time was ripe for taking the plunge.

Improved communication
At the same time his company became MareLife member and it decided to simultaneously invest in business communication and public outreach.Their new website, supported by Sustainovate, another MareLife member, informs the visitor about their fishing techniques, provide essential information on the health of fish stocks they target and describe how the company is involved in scientific research and innovation projects. Pieter Louwe currently explores possibilities to present real-time information from their fishing vessel to their website. This would be used for marketing purposes and scientific studies.

Innovative trawling - The Pulse Trawl

With pulse fishing, the heavy tickler chains of the classical beam trawler are replaced by much lighter wires through which electric impulses are sent. Advantages: Fuel consumption is 20 to 40% lower, there is less disturbance of the bottom, less by-catch and an improved catch. Bottom fish are not killed or paralyzed by the electricity, as with electro-fishing, but only triggered to leave the bottom.

Due to the social debate on improving sustainability, the high fuel prices and low fish prices, fellow fishermen have expressed a great deal of interest. Results of a recent trial project with the UK 153 were so promising that the introduction of pulse fishing on a commercial basis was only a matter of time. Cooperation between Pieter Louwe van Slooten (ex UK 153), Verburg Holland BV and other interested fishermen from Stellendam, Texel and Urk offered the solution.
